Lately there has been buzz around the new erectile dysfunction (ED) treatment Viagra. The idea for the little blue pill came to us from an in-person visit to a Singapore-based firm.
“We found out that Sildenafil was one of the first treatments to be launched in Singapore to treat ED,” said Dr. P. Balasubramaniam, a urologist and lead investigator atorously tested and funded by the firm.
Dr. Balasubramaniam, who was not involved in the study, said the firm had been on the market for several years and had received several of its customers from overseas. Balasubramaniam said that many of the customers had been from countries that had not yet licensed their use of Viagra, such as Malaysia, Thailand, India, and Indonesia.
“Most men who use Viagra have found success with it,” he added.
The firm had previously rejected the company’s application for a six-month supply. “It’s an established and well-known treatment for ED and it’s something that we are pleased to be helping to introduce to the general public,” said Dr. Balasubramaniam.
Viagra, which is already available without a prescription in Singapore, is one of a group of treatments that have been widely studied and approved by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS).
At a press conference later in November, Dr. Balasubramaniam said that he was confident that the company would be successful.
“We’re hoping that we can help to give the public access to this treatment and that we can be transparent about our experience,” he added.
However, Dr. Balasubramaniam said that while he was confident that it would be successful, he did not see any positive outcomes.
He added that although some men may experience side effects such as headaches, dizziness, or indigestion, these are usually short-lived and resolve on their own.
“When you have side effects, the next time you have an ED you can take a little more action and we’ll try to work with you to take our recommendations into account,” he said.
Balasubramaniam said that while the firm was hopeful for Viagra, the public awareness campaign “will continue to be about ED treatment,” and “will focus on people who may benefit from Viagra.”
“We’re not suggesting that Viagra is a panacea for ED problems, we are trying to give people the best possible treatment and helping to make sure that they get the treatment they need to feel good.”
Erectile dysfunction is a common condition that affects millions of people worldwide. According to a statistics sheet from the UK’s Eesti data agency, around 2.3 million men have had difficulty getting or keeping an erection during their lifetime. In Singapore, erectile dysfunction affects one in five men aged 50 and above and that is expected to rise to a staggering 30 million by the year 2029, up from about 600,000.
“ED is a common problem that affects men and women alike, and is growing at a rate of more than 50% every year,” Dr. Balasubramaniam said.
The firm’s research into Viagra has been widely reviewed and approved by regulatory bodies including the Eroxon Singapore and Singapore Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
“It is an established treatment for ED and it is something that we are happy to be helping to introduce to the general public,” Dr.
Balasubramaniam added that although many men with ED do not experience side effects, they may experience some side effects that are similar to those experienced with Viagra.
“Some men may experience headaches, dizziness or indigestion, however, these are usually short-lived and resolve on their own,” he said.
“But, if you have side effects you can take a little more action and we’ll try to work with you to take our recommendations into account.”
